White Collar Federal Charges Rejected

Three Years, Three Agencies, One Rare Result

What began three years ago as a daunting and complex white-collar federal case has finally reached its conclusion. For one grateful client and their family, that conclusion brought relief and closure.

When the case first landed on their desks, veteran attorneys Chuck Lanehart and Fred Stangl of Lubbock knew they were facing a formidable challenge. White-collar federal investigations are among the most resource-intensive matters in the legal profession. Lanehart and Stangl assembled a seasoned team equal to the task, bringing in renowned Austin-based co-counsel David Botsford — a lawyer widely respected for his appellate and criminal defense expertise — along with Lubbock trial consultant Lindsey Lanehart Craig, whose strategic insight would prove invaluable throughout the proceedings.

Together, the defense team mounted a thorough and compelling case at the federal level. Their efforts paid off: federal prosecutors declined to file charges. It was a significant win — but the battle was far from over.

Rather than closing the matter entirely, the federal authorities referred the case to the local District Attorney’s Office. Once again, Lanehart, Stangl, Botsford, and Craig went to work and persuaded the DA — that charges were not warranted. And once again, the case was not closed, but instead referred further up the chain, this time to the Texas State Attorney General’s Office.

Today, that perseverance was rewarded in the most definitive way possible. The Office of the Texas Attorney General announced that it, too, has declined to pursue charges against the client. After three years, three separate reviews by three distinct government entities — federal prosecutors, a local District Attorney, and the State Attorney General — the client’s criminal troubles are officially and permanently over.

It is a result that speaks to the extraordinary dedication of a defense team that refused to accept anything less than justice for their client.

Perhaps no one captured the significance of this outcome more than the client themselves. Upon receiving the news, they sent Chuck Lanehart a heartfelt text message:

“Man, I wish I was next to you to give you a huge thank you hug!! You have been a blessing to our family. You truly saved us ♥️.”

In the law, victories are rarely simple, and they are almost never handed to you. This one was earned — through years of diligent work, strategic brilliance, and an unshakable belief in a client’s right to justice. Congratulations to Chuck Lanehart, Fred Stangl, David Botsford, and Lindsey Lanehart Craig on a truly remarkable achievement.
