Chuck Lanehart Honored at Texas Tech Alumni Dinner
Texas Tech University’s College of Media & Communications recognized Chuck Lanehart as an outstanding alumni.
Bio of Chuck Lanehart
Chuck Lanehart, a respected criminal defense attorney, has practiced law in Texas for over four decades. A graduate of Texas Tech University, he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism in 1974 and a Doctor of Jurisprudence in 1977. At Tech, he was a member of The University Daily now known as The Daily Toreador and Kappa Tau Alpha.
Board certified in Criminal Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization, Chuck has tried hundreds of cases in state and federal courts, including over 200 homicide cases. His career includes a rare capital murder acquittal and successes in complex white-collar defense. Committed to justice, he often represents college students at reduced rates and occasionally takes pro bono cases.
An active leader in the legal community, Chuck served as President of the Lubbock Area Bar Association, Director of the State Bar of Texas, and Director of the Texas Criminal Defense Lawyers Association (TCDLA), earning multiple awards for his service. He is a founding member and past
president of the Lubbock Criminal Defense Lawyers Association and is a frequent lecturer and mentor to young attorneys.
Outside the courtroom, Chuck has served on the boards of several civic organizations and writes a regular history column for the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal. His book, Tragedy and Triumph on the Texas
Plains, was published in 2021.
In 2008, he was named one of Lubbock’s “200 Most Influential People.” Chuck and his wife, The Honorable Paula L. Lanehart, share a deep commitment to the law and to their community. Paula, a distinguished graduate of Texas Tech University with a Bachelor of Business Administration in 1973 and a Doctor of Jurisprudence in 1977, has enjoyed a successful legal career and serves as a respected member of the judiciary.
