Lubbock Domestic Violence Dispute Evolves into a Criminal Case

Chuck Lanehart and Kaylee Long received recognition from the Lubbock Criminal Defense Lawyers Association (LCDLA) for a complex criminal and family law case.

Case Background

The client represented herself and filed a protective order against her ex-boyfriend after he committed an act of domestic violence. In retaliation, he filed a bogus felony criminal charge against her, and she was arrested.

Craig Trial Consultants referred the client to Chuck, who was hired on the criminal case and got it dismissed immediately. He then reached out to the LCDLA list serve for assistance in litigating the protective order. Kaylee immediately volunteered.

Results

After three days of testimony, Judge Stephen Johnson found the ex had committed family violence and was guilty of harassment, granted a two-year protective order and ordered the ex to pay Chuck and Kaylee $25,000 in attorney fees and expenses.

The most interesting part of the case was the digital manipulation the ex boyfriend used to tarnish the reputation of his ex-girlfriend. Multiple fake social media posts, fake emails and fake text messages via untraceable “burner phones” were deployed by the ex boyfriend.

During the hearings, it was clear the ex committed multiple federal and state crimes, including false report to law enforcement, stalking, harassment, online impersonation and destruction of mail, not to mention aggravated perjury.
