One of the Oldest Criminal Law Firms in Lubbock

Chappell, Lanehart & Stangl, P.C. has early roots in Lubbock, dating back to a time when the town was populated by only about 50,000 residents.

On September 1, 1948, Byron Chappel became licensed after graduating with a law degree from the University of Texas Law School, following his distinguished South Pacific military service during World War II. He opened a private practice in Lubbock with his father, and the firm was first known as Chappell & Chappell.

For more than 50 years, Chappell practiced criminal law representing clients on the South Plains of Texas and well beyond. In 1989, he was honored as the first inductee into the Lubbock Criminal Defense Lawyers Association Hall of Fame. In 2000, Byron Chappell passed away, but his mark on our firm, the Lubbock community and thousands of clients will always be remembered. That same year, Byron was posthumously honored as Distinguished Senior Lawyer, the Lubbock County Bar Association’s highest award.

In 1977, Chuck Lanehart, a native of Abilene and graduate of Texas Tech, joined the firm. In 1982, he became a partner. The firm changed names several times as new partners joined to learn from the leadership of Byron Chappell and Chuck Lanehart.

In 1999, Fred Stangl joined and the law firm soon changed to Chappell, Lanehart & Stangl, P.C. Almost two decades later and 69 years since inception, CL&S focuses on representing individuals accused of crimes.

Chappell, Lanehart & Stangl P.C. remains the oldest continuously operating criminal law firm in Lubbock. Chuck Lanehart and Fred Stangl are both certified in Criminal Law by the State Bar of Texas. Both attorneys represent clients individually and together, ensuring the best defense for our clients who have entrusted us with their futures.
